The BNY Mellon Young Sports Reporters of the Year have been presented with their school trophies during presentations at their schools led by members of the winning Oxford crew.
As part of BNY Mellon’s five year sponsorship of The Boat Race, the Young Sports Reporter of the Year Award was launched as an incentive for children to engage with rowing and enhance their literacy skills. The competition attracted entries from 1,358 students at 614 schools nationwide.
Skye Whelan, age 9, from Godstone Village Primary School was given her prize by Oxford blue boat number two Geordie MacLeod during a special assembly. New President of the Oxford University Boat Club Malcolm Howard attended Bablake School to present Sam Lowe, 13, with his award.
Both Sam and Skye were delighted with their prizes. Sam said “I was just really hoping for the best and if you follow your dreams then who knows? I like sports and I like writing so to combine the two and win makes me very happy,” while Skye commented “I like writing about sports so I thought I might be in with a chance of winning but I didn’t expect it. I’m glad I won because it is a really good prize at the end.”
Both winners enjoyed a VIP day out with their families at The Boat Race on March 31 as guests of BNY Mellon.
